One person is dead after a helicopter went down west of Dunedin on Thursday morning.

The helicopter was reported overdue just before 6:30am on Thursday, after leaving Alexandra but failing to arrive in Milton at the scheduled time.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said one person was on board the craft, which was involved in a "serious" accident north of Lawrence. The Rescue Coordination Centre confirmed to Newshub the missing craft was found at 7:30am at Deep Creek.

One person was listed as being on board, but there were no survivors.

Police said they were unable to provide any additional information about the pilot until all family notifications have been carried out.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) will lead the investigation into the crash. Police say they will provide assistance as required.
