A man has been charged with murder following the death of an elderly man in south Auckland.

Mohammed Hakim, 72, died on Tuesday evening, police said.

A 33-year-old is expected to appear in Manukau District Court on Thursday charged with his murder.

"Police are supporting the victim’s family at this difficult time and our thoughts are with them as they grieve the loss of a much loved family member," said Snr Sgt Tom Gollan.

On Wednesday police said they were speaking to a man and weren't seeking anyone else in relation to the death. A post mortem was also carried out.

Gollan said the family were "devastated", and have requested privacy.
