Man dies after being restrained in south Auckland police custody

A man in his 20s has died after he was restrained in south Auckland police custody on Monday.

Police were called to an address in Ōtara where a man breaching his electronically monitored bail was found and arrested.

Police say the man then began displaying "unusual behaviour" and tried to injure himself in his custody cell.

He was then put in a restraint chair for his own safety and placed under constant monitoring, but after his condition deteriorated was taken to Middlemore Hospital.

"He had been at Middlemore Hospital but died yesterday," says Counties Manukau District Commander Superintendent Jill Rogers.

"His next-of-kin has been notified and is being supported. Police are also ensuring that there is support in place for our staff involved in this incident."

Supt Rogers adds a number of investigations are underway into this incident and these remain ongoing.

"While the investigations continue it would be inappropriate for police to comment further at this time."
