Waikato Regional Council is hoping to get the Te Huia train service from Hamilton to Auckland back on track from October, if Auckland moves back to alert level 2 - but this time with a few added extras.

Hamilton City Councillor Dave Macpherson confirmed on Twitter today that the service, which has been unable to operate during alert levels 3 and 4 due to crossing the regional boundary, will start running again once the Auckland region drops to alert level 2.

One improvement to Te Huia includes the weekday service, which will now continue its way to Auckland’s Strand Station - which is a 20-minute or 1.5km walk to Britomart station.

Previously, the service finished at Papakura Station, with passengers switching to Auckland Transport services.

Other changes to the service include a Stop at Puhinui Station and a return trip from Auckland to Hamilton post morning peak which will start in 2022.
