A falling tree has killed a person in the South Island's Selwyn District.

A police spokesperson said officers were called to a property in Windwhistle, a small farming settlement about 80km west of Christchurch, just before 11:30am on Friday.

"Emergency services responded following a report of a person trapped under a fallen tree in a paddock off Windwhistle Road," they said.

"Sadly, the person died at the scene."

Fire and Emergency said two trucks had been deployed from Hororata and Methven and crews were at the scene.

Enquiries are underway to determine what occurred.
