Avondale shooting: Auckland man who died in shooting incident named by police

The victim of a fatal shooting in the Auckland suburb of Avondale on Saturday morning has been named.

The man was 28-year-old Mars Rakeem, Detective Inspector Lloyd Schmid said in a statement on Monday afternoon.

"Police are supporting his family during this very distressing time," Det Insp Schmid said.

"The family are grieving and ask for privacy and do not want to be contacted by the media."

On Sunday, it was confirmed that two people had been charged in relation to the shooting. A 24-year-old male has been charged with murder, drug supply and firearms-related charges, while a 20-year-old woman has been charged with accessory after the fact of murder, drug supply and attempting to dissuade witnesses.

They are both due to appear in the Auckland District Court on Monday.

Police were called to the area shortly before 4:30am on Saturday after local residents heard gunshots. Saintly Ln was cordoned off while officers, including members of the Armed Offenders Squad, cleared a residential property.

Rakeem was rushed to hospital in a serious condition but died from his injuries. A homicide investigation was launched later that day.
