Newshub cameras captured the moment a man was arrested outside Parliament in Wellington after admitting he travelled from Auckland, which police say was in breach of the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions.

Police say an urgent COVID test has been taken but the man was not showing any symptoms at the time of the arrest.

A police van driven by an officer wearing full PPE arrived at Parliament's forecourt around 2:30pm on Saturday afternoon.

However the officers who handled the man and his belongings, a large bag and a sleeping mat, were only wearing a mask and gloves at the time and appeared not to maintain a two-metre distance.

Police say the man has had one vaccination and the Ministry of Health has been notified.
