Four people have been arrested after a shooting in Invercargill on Saturday that left a teenager with wounds to his back.

At about 4:40pm on Saturday, a 19-year-old man turned up at Southland Hospital with four gunshots to his back, requiring surgery. The shooting is believed to have happened at a Tweed St address, where a number of items of interest have been located.

Police now say search warrants were executed this week and three men and a woman have been arrested in relation to the incident.

A 26-year-old woman and 21-year-old man have been charged with firearms offences and a 36-year-old has been charged with both firearms and drug offences. They will appear in Invercargill District Court on Thursday.

A 25-year-old man has been charged with offences in relation to the possession of ammunition, resisting police and assaulting police. He has already appeared in court and will be remanded in custody until October 12.

"Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and as the matter is before the court Police are not in a position to comment further at this time," a statement says.

On Monday, police said they believed the incident "could be gang-related".

"We want to reassure the community that we are hugely focused on ensuring we locate those responsible and hold them to account," police said at the time. "Since the incident on Saturday, there has been an increased Police presence in the area."
