A large pane fell from a Lambton Quay building in Wellington on Wednesday morning and glass has continued to fall from the 20th floor of the HSBC building this morning.

It began about 6am and the cause is still being investigated.

An eyewitness says he heard a loud bang, and that a pedestrian had just walked past the area where the glass landed.

A large section of Lambton Quay and the neighbouring Panama street area has been shut off since.

RNZ reported on Wednesday afternoon an abseiling crew was scaling the building to remove the remaining glass - by dropping it to the ground.
