Have your say: Should vaccine certificates be mandatory at hospitality businesses?

  • 06/10/2021

While the Government has announced vaccine certificates will be required for Kiwis attending large, high-risk events in the future, it's unclear yet if they'll be needed to enter hospitality businesses.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Tuesday announced that consultation is underway on whether the Government will make the passes - which confirm if someone is fully vaccinated - mandatory for other businesses, like hospitality, where there is a possibility of transmission. She ruled out requiring them for essential services, like healthcare and supermarkets.

But many in the hospitality sector are calling out for the Government to make the passports mandatory, concerned that if businesses have to require them themselves, there is the chance of conflict between staff and patrons.

"If it's mandated then it's going to save a lot of hassle on the venue side from arguing with people on the door or online," Auckland's Whammy Bar co-owner Tom Anderson told Newshub.
