Police have cordoned off the Head Hunters gang headquarters in west Auckland after a person was critically injured in a firearms incident earlier on Sunday.

Police say they were called around 3:20pm after reports of a physical altercation between a group of people at an Astley Avenue address in New Lynn.

One person was critically injured there in what's believed to have been a shooting. They were taken to hospital.

Armed police are now surrounding the Head Hunters' gang headquarters in Henderson in relation to the incident.

"They've surrounded the Head Hunters base and they're demanding they come out one by one at gunpoint," a witness told the NZ Herald.

"They're coming out with their arms up."

Police say they are still making enquiries to understand what happened.
