A man killed during an "incredibly violent attack" in Ōtorohanga on Saturday night has been named as "hard-working family man" Anthony Takrouna Bell.

Police were called to Maniapoto Street around 6:30pm on Saturday to an altercation between two groups following an earlier 'road rage' incident.

A man was confirmed to have died at the scene.

"This was an incredibly violent attack in a very public place," Waikato police Detective Inspector Graham Pitkethley said.

The man who died has now been named as 34-year-old Anthony Takrouna Bell from Te Kuiti.

A Givealittle page set up for Bell's family described it as a "horrific event".

It described Bell as a "hard-working family man" who provided for his six children and was saving hard to buy a first home.

A police spokesperson said investigators are continuing to make enquiries into Bell's death and they are appealing to the public for information about the movement of two vehicles.

"We want to hear from anyone who saw a white Mazda Bounty ute carrying a trail bike, and a black Volkswagen Amarok ute travelling from Te Awamutu to Ōtorohanga between 5pm and 6:20pm on Saturday night," said Det Inspt Pitkethley.

"We would also like to thank all of the people who have already come forward with information which is proving extremely helpful as we build a picture of what occurred."

The scene examination on Maniapoto Street has finished, however, there remains an increased police presence in the area.

Anyone who has information is asked to call 105 and quote file number 211002/2797. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
