Police officer knocked unconscious by man who jumped in front of traffic on Auckland's northern motorway

A police officer has been knocked unconscious by a man who jumped in front of traffic on Auckland's Northern Motorway.

Inspector Peter Raynes said shortly after 10.20am on Wednesday, police were notified of an incident on the Northern Motorway, northbound near Tristram Avenue.

Raynes said it appears a man jumped in front of traffic on the motorway, which caused a minor collision involving three vehicles. The man then reportedly threw himself at a truck.

He then jumped onto the windscreen of the police car which was responding, damaging it.

The officer got out of the vehicle where he was assaulted by the offender and a struggle ensued.

The officer then attempted to taser the man and was knocked unconscious by the offender.

Raynes said bystanders helped restrain the man until additional police arrived and arrested him.

The officer was transported to hospital where he will be assessed for injuries. Police will be ensuring that they have welfare wrapped around them following this alarming incident, Raynes said.

The man who was tasered has also been taken to hospital as a precaution.

Enquiries are ongoing and charges are likely.
