Two people have been killed and three injured in a serious crash near Waihola, between Dunedin and Milton in Otago.
Police said they were notified of the two-car crash on State Highway 1 at about 9:15am.
"The road remains closed and diversions are in place," they said in a statement.
"Please note that these diversions are not suitable for heavy traffic, and those vehicles are advised to expect lengthy delays."
The serious crash unit is investigating.
