Wellingtonian proves you don't need a car to move house

A Wellington man who's trying to live car-free faced a potential issue on Saturday about how he would move houses.

'No worries' he thought, 'I'll just show how it can all be done by bicycle'.

It was a very unusual sight, even for Wellington standards - when all of Jonathan Coppard's worldly possessions were being peddled through the city.

"I need to move house, I don't have a car and I try to live a zero-carbon lifestyle as much as I can," Coppard tells Newshub.

So he called everyone he knew with a cargo bike in Wellington, promised them refreshments and loaded all his belongings, even the bed, onto two wheels rather than four.

"Transport is one of our biggest emissions in an urban environment," Coppard says. "There are plenty of options out there for people to travel in a zero or low carbon way."

The option Coppard chose on Saturday involved ten cyclists, although they don't like that word.

"I don't call us cyclists, I call us people who ride bikes," Alex Dyer from Cycle Wellington tells Newshub.

The group took the scenic route to the new flat to raise awareness of cargo bikes and just how much they can carry. And attracting attention from the public.

"Think they would struggle not to notice us, we’ve got a lot of weird things piled on the bikes," Coppard says.

The direct route to his new flat is just 600 metres, but they turned it into a 4km journey through the Wellington CBD and around the bustling waterfront, demonstrating that bikes can carry more than just people.

"People do underestimate how much bikes can work for us," Dyer says.

The group is keen for people to reduce their reliance on vehicles, “We are really running out of time to make changes with our emissions,” says Coppard.

They made it safely to Coppard's new flat with just one casualty.

"Yeah, two packs of pasta overboard," Coppard jokes.
