Woolworths is recalling raw and brown sugar from South Island and Wellington stores, as they may contain low levels of lead.
The recall includes 500g, 1.2kg and 4kg of Chelsea brand raw sugar, 500g and 1kg of Chelsea soft brown sugar, 500g, 1kg of Countdown-branded raw sugar and 500g, 1kg Countdown-branded brown sugar.
The recall of Chelsea and Countdown branded raw and brown sugar is from any Countdown, SuperValue or FreshChoice store in the South Island as well as Countdown Petone, Countdown Lower Hutt or Countdown Upper Hutt in Wellington.
The sugar was subject to a recall earlier this month, but the supermarket chain has released the products in error.
Customers should look to return these products if they bought them on either Thursday, November 25 or Friday, November 26.
"The sugar has been recalled due to low-level lead contamination and was part of a recall issued earlier in the month," Countdown says. "This stock was mistakenly dispatched from one of Countdown’s distribution centres.
"Woolworths New Zealand takes food safety very seriously and we apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by this recall."
New Zealand Food Safety has said that the immediate risk from the sugar is low.
Woolworths says that any customer who has bought these products during this timeframe should not eat it, and is asked to return the product to their nearest Countdown, SuperValue or FreshChoice store for a full refund.
This isn't the first time Chelsea sugar has been recalled. Just seven days ago, Foodstuffs conducted a recall on the brand's raw sugar after it was detected to contain traces of lead.
The sugar was part of the same recall earlier in November, but the supermarket chain had released it in error.
