COVID-19: Hundreds of motorcyclists descend on Wellington streets for anti-lockdown protests

Hundreds of motorcyclists have descended on the streets of Wellington for anti-lockdown protests on Tuesday.

Footage shows hundreds of bikies arriving at the gathering near Parliament, where people are protesting against COVID-19 vaccine mandates and lockdown restrictions.

A social media post by one motorcyclist said they were "uniting here in Wellington" and "making thunder".

In a statement, police said officers were monitoring the gathering at Parliament on Tuesday.

"Police, together with our civic and community partners, will respond to any issues as they arise," a spokesperson said.

"Police have the ability to take enforcement action against anyone in breach of alert level restrictions - this could include an infringement notice or a court summons."

Wellington is currently at alert level 2, meaning gatherings of no more than 100 are permitted.
