Police have launched a homicide investigation after a five-year-old boy died in hospital on Friday morning.

Malachi Subecz was found injured on Monday, November 1 at a Te Puna residential property. He was treated at Tauranga Hospital before being airlifted to Auckland's Starship Children's Hospital, where he died on Friday.

"Police would like to speak with anyone who may have seen Malachi in the last couple of months," said Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Rawlinson.

"We are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who is yet to speak with Police."

Rawlinson said on Friday the death was being treated as suspicious and a post-mortem was being carried out.
