Multiple people are dead in a serious crash on SH1 in Horowhenua.
Emergency services were called to the crash near Kuku just after 3pm on Tuesday after a truck collided with a van.
The state highway remains closed and the serious crash unit is on-site to investigate.
"Police can confirm there are multiple fatalities however further information is unable to be provided at this stage," police say in a statement.
"There are no diversions in place and police are working to be able to reopen one lane of the road as quickly as possible."
Waka Kotahi NZTA Wellington warns the road is likely to be closed for several hours.
