Police investigating 'serious' shooting in Auckland's Blockhouse Bay

Police are investigating a "serious firearms incident" in the Auckland suburb of Blockhouse Bay on Wednesday night.

At about 7:15pm on Wednesday, police say they were notified a person had been shot on Dundale Ave. Officers responded and found a man injured in the driveway to a property.

He was taken to Auckland Hospital in a critical condition, underwent surgery and is now in a stable condition in hospital.

A scene guard remains at the property and police will be at the site throughout Thursday carrying out a scene examination.

"Anyone with information about this incident or who saw any suspicious activity in the area surrounding Dundale Ave around 7.15pm yesterday should call Police on 105, quoting file 211110/7326 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

A man who lives in a property on the street told Newshub he was sitting in his room when he heard what he initially thought were fireworks.

"I heard two bangs and thought to myself 'no, we are close to Guy Fawkes so it is probably that'. I had that kinda gut feeling inside of me that it was outside of that. I heard yelling, then I heard the chopper."

He said he had heard some "distress" before from the property where the shooting took place, but otherwise the street was a quiet one.

"This street, we never have any behaviour like that. We really don't. It is pretty surprising."
