Warnings of "significant traffic disruptions" have been issued by the police ahead of a gang tangi in Porirua on Wednesday.

A group of cars is expected to move through multiple suburbs and down State Highway 1. Stuff reported the tangi is for 35-year-old Mongrel Mob member Terry Taiapa, who was killed in a motorbike collision.

Kāpiti-Mana area prevention manager Insp Nick Thom says "significant traffic disruptions" are expected.

"A large funeral procession is expected to travel across the area and will pass through Cannons Creek, Waitangirua, Ascot Park and Titahi Bay, before proceeding to Whenua Tapu Cemetery in Pukerua Bay."

At the time of the procession, due to start about 12:30pm and last at least an hour, motorists are being asked to avoid those areas. Thom said officers were aware of the community's concerns about the tangi.

He said there would be a large police presence around the concerned areas.

"It may pay for to avoid these locations during this time," Thom said in a statement.

"Police urge those involved to be considerate of other road users and to adhere to alert level restrictions."

Earlier this week, 50 infringement notices were issued following dangerous driving at a tangi in Porirua last month.
