Police say a 30-year-old man died in a rafting incident near Queenstown's Lake Wakatipu earlier this week.

According to a statement, Stephen Andrew Bowler, of Queenstown, was among a group of people in inflatable pack rafts on Caples River around 1pm on Monday when there was an incident. No details are provided about what happened.

Police are making enquiries in relation to his death on behalf of the Coroner and have extended their sympathies to Bowler's friends and family.

"As a mark of respect, Ngāi Tahu has put a rāhui in place for Caples River, including the stretch of river mouth where it meets Lake Wakatipu."

This will remain until November 30.
