Teen dead after apparent shooting in Christchurch

A teenager is dead and a homicide investigation underway after an apparent fatal shooting on Friday night.

Police were called to Heaphy Pl in Casebrook, Christchurch just after 11pm, responding to reports of a firearms incident.

The 16-year-old was already dead when they arrived.

"A homicide investigation, including a scene examination, is under way to determine what occurred and who is responsible," Det Insp Michael Ford said on Saturday morning.

"We are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time, and can assist with our inquiries, to come forward and speak to us."

The alleged shooter hasn't been found, Stuff reports.

Police later told Newshub they were following up lines of inquiry, including a vehicle of interest seen on Matsons Ave a few blocks away. It's understood the car had previously been reported stolen.

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 105, quoting event number P048523046, or get in touch with Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
