Three people have been burned in an alleged Molotov cocktail attack in Pukekohe on Sunday.

Emergency services were called to the town 45 minutes south of Auckland shortly after midday after an "altercation" took place. Police said the people involved knew each other.

"A Molotov cocktail was allegedly produced by one party and in the course of the altercation three people received burn injuries," a spokesperson says.

"One person is in Middlemore Hospital with critical injuries and two other persons received minor burn injuries."

A 32-year-old woman is in police custody and will appear before the Manukau District Court on Monday on charges of threatening to kill, aggravated wounding and assault with a blunt instrument.

Police are unable to comment further as this matter is before the courts.
