Residents of Geraldine township and Geraldine Flat have been advised to boil their water after a failed water standard test.

The Timaru District Council said the test failed because of the non-chlorinated status of the supply which has seen a boil water notice issued.

It's advising residents to boil their water for at least a minute for all personal uses until further notice. This includes drinking, cooking and eating and brushing their teeth.

The council will also be "temporarily chlorinating the Geraldine supply" to sanitise the system and they have asked residents to tell friends and neighbours.

How to boil water for drinking:

  • Bring water to a rolling boil (where bubbles appear in the centre and do not disappear when the water is stirred) for one minute or boil a full electric jug until it switches off
  • Cool water (do not use ice cubes to do this) and pour into clean container with a lid
  • Refrigerate until needed.
