Weather: Strong winds blast New Zealand, 'small tornadoes' possible on South Island's West Coast

A day of unsettled weather is set to continue on Tuesday with strong winds blasting both the South and North Islands.

While much of the country will see more settled weather on Wednesday, it's expected to keep going downhill for the rest of Tuesday.

MetService says strong winds are expected in Wairarapa until 11pm on Tuesday after gusts of 105km/h were recorded in Masterton.

In Wellington's Kelburn, top wind gusts of 118km/h were recorded.

"No relief just yet as severe gales continue in exposed areas until later tonight," MetService says.

In its thunderstorm outlook, MetService said Horowhenua/Kapiti Coast, Wellington and Marlborough Sounds could all get heavy rain, strong wind gusts and hail on Tuesday evening.

And elsewhere in the South Island strong winds are expected in the far west of Nelson, Buller, Westland and Fiordland.

"Any thunderstorms that occur may bring heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 25mm per hour, strong wind gusts of 80 to 100km/h and 5 to 15mm hail," MetService said.

"Small tornadoes are possible near the coast. There is a low risk in a broader area extending further east across the alps, the remainder of Nelson, northern Marlborough and also Stewart Island and coastal Southland."
