It could be a stressful day for Aucklanders looking to commute around the city or escape north with road incidents causing traffic delays on Wednesday.

For those hoping to leave the city and head north, Waka Kotahi is warning they should expect delays or take State Highway 16.

"Due to holiday traffic, continue to expect congestion heading north on #SH1. Consider using SH16 as an alternative route," the agency tweeted just before midday.

Shortly before 11am, Waka Kotahi tweeted a breakdown on the Harbour Bridge could cause delays for citybound travellers.

There was also drama on the road further south when a piece of debris partly blocked a southbound lane on State Highway 1.

"Due to debris part-blocking the right southbound lane after Hill Rd off-ramp, expect delays," Waka Kotahi tweeted.

The transport agency later said the debris had been cleared, but warned Aucklanders to expect delays as congestion eases.
