A critically injured baby taken to Starship Hospital on Wednesday has died, prompting a homicide investigation.

The 10-month-old boy had injuries believed to be "non-accidental", police said on Friday.

He has since died. A post mortem will take place on Saturday.

"As such, the investigation has now been upgraded to a homicide inquiry," Det Insp Aaron Proctor said.

"Police inquiries are continuing, and any further updates will be provided when able."

No one had been arrested as of Friday.
