Coronavirus: More than eight million vaccines given in New Zealand, additional MIQ Omicron cases found

There were 55 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, a slight increase from Saturday's two-month low in numbers.

Aside from the daily case numbers, you may have missed the details of the Ministry of Health's latest update.

Here's a breakdown of Sunday's case numbers and data.

Locations of cases

Of Sunday's 55 new cases, 41 are in Auckland, seven in Taranaki, four in Waikato, and three in Bay of Plenty.

Auckland

The exact location of Auckland's cases is not reported by the Ministry of Health.

There are 1928 people isolating at home, including 530 cases.

Waikato

Of Waikato's four new cases, three are in Te Kūiti and one is in Tokoroa.

Three of the cases have been linked to the outbreak and one is under investigation.

Two people are receiving care at Waikato Hospital.

There are 63 people isolating at home.

Bay of Plenty

All three of the Bay of Plenty's new infections are in Tauranga and all are contacts of previous cases.

Taranaki

Of Taranaki's seven new cases, four are linked to the Eltham cluster and two to the New Plymouth Case. One case will be officially transferred to Auckland's case numbers as they reside there for work purposes but have a permanent Taranaki address.

Omicron MIQ cases

There are a further five cases of Omicron that have been detected in international arrivals, bringing New Zealand's total number of cases with the variant to 13. All of these have been found in MIQ.

Of these five new Omicron cases, four remain in managed isolation and one has recovered and has been released.

The recovered case arrived from London via Singapore on December 7.  This case tested positive on their day 0/1 testing and was closely managed in MIQ, the Ministry of Health says. They were never in the community while infectious.

As an added precaution, 30 other passengers on their flight are regarded as close contacts. So far, 27 of these passengers have completed day nine tests and returned negative results and testing is underway for the remaining three.
