As of Wednesday, there are 1272 active cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand

In a statement, the health ministry confirmed Waikato District Health Board is also set to become the 13th DHB to reach the 90 percent fully vaccinated milestone.

The number of New Zealand patients in hospital with COVID-19 has again fallen. On Wednesday, 48 patients were reported, down from 54 on Tuesday. Seven people remain in intensive care.

Of the 46 community cases reported in the past day, 30 were detected in Auckland while positive tests were also returned in Waikato (6), Lakes (4), Northland (3), Tairāwhiti (2) while there was also an infection found in Canterbury. Testing numbers rose again in the past day to 8773 - up from 7540 on Tuesday and 5716 on Monday.

However, the ministry noted "testing numbers remain lower than usual in the holiday period". The seven-day rolling average of PCR swabs taken is 12,969.

"The ministry urges anyone with any symptoms that could be COVID-19, even if they're away on holiday, to get a test and remain where they are until they receive a negative result and are feeling better.

"This applies as well to vaccinated people with even mild symptoms.

"For those away on holiday who test positive you will be contacted regarding your ongoing care," the ministry said.
