COVID-19: Person in Napier tests positive, investigation underway

A person in Napier has tested positive for COVID-19, Hawke's Bay DHB has confirmed.

It's the first case in the city since a man moved from Auckland to Napier in mid-November.

Medical officer of health Dr Nick Jones said the case was now isolating at home and is getting appropriate support.

Investigations are underway to find out how the case contracted COVID-19.

Jones said all known close contacts of the case had been identified, are isolating and are being tested for COVID-19.

"Any locations of interest are also being investigated and as standard procedure will be added to the Ministry of Health's (MoH) webpage if, and when, they are confirmed by public health," he said.

It is crucial anyone with cold or flu symptoms, no matter how mild, got tested for COVID-19 even if they were vaccinated, Jones said.

"Detecting the virus to avoid community spread is in everyone's interest and the right thing to do, even if you have very mild symptoms. Drive-in testing centres and booked appointments are available throughout the holiday period with good capacity," he said.

Jones also urged anyone unvaccinated to get protected from COVID-19 and have their vaccine as soon as possible.

People double vaccinated and eligible to get their booster should also get it done, he said.

"Getting vaccinated is your best protection against COVID-19 vaccinated people far less likely to require hospital care if getting the virus."

The case wasn't counted in the updated numbers released by the MoH earlier today.

There were 60 new community Delta infections announced - 20 in Auckland, 28 in Waikato, eight in Bay of Plenty and one each in Lakes, Tairāwhiti and Canterbury.

A second Omicron case in the community was also reported, an Air New Zealand crew member. No locations of interest have been identified yet, and seven close contacts have returned negative tests.
