Police are working to find someone who fled from hospital overnight, after being transferred there from an Auckland managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) facility.

The person had been taken to Middlemore Hospital at midnight on Sunday, a Northern Region Health Coordination Centre spokesperson said.

However just two hours later, at around 2am on Monday morning, the patient left the emergency department without being formally discharged. Police were notified of the person's departure at 2:25am.

The person returned a negative result when they took a COVID-19 test upon entering New Zealand, the NRHCC says, and has since returned a second negative test.

However health officials say it's important that they complete their period of isolation.

Police are currently trying to locate the person.
