Flat Bush shooting: Man charged with unlawful possession of firearm, 'further charges being considered'

A man has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm after the death of another man in the Auckland suburb of Flat Bush on Boxing Day.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Bezar Pl in the early hours of Sunday, after residents reported hearing gunshots and a person in distress.

The armed offenders squad used a ladder to get to the top floor of the house and removed several people from the property - including a child.

Police negotiated with another man who remained inside the house, who eventually came out with his hands on his head, witnesses said.

The body of another man was located inside the house and a homicide investigation was subsequently launched.

In an update on Monday, Det Insp Tofilau Fa'amanuia Va'aelua said a 38-year-old man has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

"Further charges are also being considered," Va'aelua said in a statement.

"A post mortem is expected to be carried out tomorrow on the victim located inside the property.

"We would like to reassure the community that we are not seeking anybody else in relation to this incident."

Va'aelua said the man charged was due to appear in the Manukau District Court on Monday.

The victim's name cannot yet be released as the formal identification process was ongoing, Va'aelua said.

There will be a continued police presence in the area on Monday as a scene examination continues.
