A passerby has pulled a man's body from Wellington harbour.

Police say emergency services were called to reports of a sudden death in central Wellington this morning.

Stuff reports the man was recovered from Wellington harbour near the Star Boating Club after a passerby saw the body in the water and pulled him ashore.

"A 47-year-old man was retrieved from Wellington Harbour at about 7am and has died at the scene," police said in a statement.
