A search is underway on the Manawatū River after two people failed to surface after going underwater.

Emergency services were notified of the incident near Maxwell's Line at 3:15pm, near to a popular swimming spot.

Police have confirmed that an 11-year-old girl got into difficulty in the river. A 25-year-old woman went in after her and both disappeared.

Family at the scene weren't able to locate them and called emergency services. An air, water and ground search was then launched.

St John confirmed it responded with a helicopter and ambulance, however they've now been stood down.

The river has been swollen from heavy rain and the resulting discolouration of the water is likely to complicate the search.
