An NZ Post employee has died after becoming trapped under one of the company’s Paxter electric buggies in Tawa.

"NZ Post is devastated to lose a team member in a tragic accident in Tawa yesterday," NZ Post CEO David Walsh told Newshub.

"At this difficult time, our thoughts are with family, colleagues and the wider NZ Post team."

Police confirmed a person died shortly after officers arrived at the scene on Lyndhurst Road at 2.20pm Thursday, and that the workplace fatality had been reported to WorkSafe.

A WorkSafe spokesperson told Newshub they were aware of "an incident in Tawa".

Enquiries into the circumstances are underway, however initial indications from police are that the vehicle rolled down a small bank on the residential street.
