MetService has issued a heavy rain watch for Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatū, Horowhenua, Kapiti, the Tararua Range, Bay of Plenty east of Ōpōtiki and Gisborne north of Tolaga Bay.

The slow-moving front is expected to move northeast over the lower North Island on Tuesday, bringing a period of heavy rain with possible thunderstorms. A trough of low pressure was expected to bring severe weather further north in parts of Gisborne and Bay of Plenty.

Rain in Westland eased overnight and was easing in Buller on Tuesday morning, MetServce said. The warning for heavy rain in these areas has now been lifted.

MetService is urging people to stay up to date with the latest forecasts in case any changes are made or further areas are added to the severe weather warning.
