Sisters, one charged with murder, to front court over death of 5yo Malachi Subecz in Te Puna

Two women will front court on Wednesday over the death of a five-year-old boy who died in hospital last month.

Malachi Subecz was found with injuries at a property in Te Puna, Bay of Plenty on November 1. He was taken to Tauranga Hospital before being airlifted to Auckland's Starship Hospital, where he later died. 

Police subsequently launched a homicide probe and arrested two women on November 17.

In an update, police said those women were due to appear in the Tauranga District Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Det Snr Sgt Craig Rawlinson said 27-year-old Michaela Barriball has been charged with murder, disfiguring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and injuring with intent to injure.

"She has previously been charged with ill-treating Malachi prior to his death," he said in a statement.

Barriball's sister, 37-year-old Sharon Barriball, has been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice relating to the investigation of Malachi's death.
