A person has died following a serious crash in the Horowhenua region, which has closed State Highway 1 with motorists warned to "expect delays".
Emergency services were alerted to the crash between a truck and a car just before 6am on Monday.
Police said that the driver of the car died at the scene while the truck driver sustained moderate injuries.
Waka Kotahi said the road is closed north of the South Manakau Road intersection with detours in place and motorists are being asked to follow directions of emergency services on site.
Police said a scene examination is in progress and motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible and to expect delays.
"The road is closed and motorists are advised to expect delays if travelling on SH1 this morning [Monday]," police said.
