Police are investigating an unvaccinated Canterbury police officer over suspected use of a fake vaccine pass.

"Police take matters such as this very seriously and enquiries are under way to determine if the alleged activity has occurred," a police spokesperson told Newshub.

Due to privacy obligations over employment matters, police said they are unable to provide further information.

Stuff reported the officer was using the pass at venues such as cafes before the police's vaccine mandate and the man's superior is believed to have knowledge of his alleged use of the fake pass.

It was announced on November 26 that all police and Defence Force workers will be required to be vaccinated as part of the COVID-19 traffic light system.

As of January 16, more than 200 police officers were yet to get their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, many faced being stood down on January 17.
