A 5.8-magnitude earthquake late on Wednesday hit 25km east of Stratford.

The earthquake at 11:49pm could be felt across the North and South Islands, including as far away as Wanaka, with 35,000 people reporting they felt it on the GeoNet website.

GeoNet says the earthquake happened 187km below the Taranaki region.
