A homicide probe is underway after a woman was found unresponsive on a Christchurch street overnight.
At about 10:40pm on Wednesday night, emergency services were called to Hawke St in New Brighton where a woman, in her 40s, was reportedly assaulted near a Countdown supermarket car park. Police say she was unresponsive and succumbed to her injuries to the way to hospital.
In a statement, police said a 43-year-old man has since been charged with murder.
"A scene examination will continue today in the vicinity of the Countdown carpark in Hawke St," police said on Thursday morning.
The man charged is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court on Thursday.
