The son of prominent New Zealand epidemiologist Michael Baker has tested positive for COVID-19.
Australia-based George Baker and his partner tested positive for the virus this week, Stuff reported. They were both fully vaccinated and scheduled for their booster jabs.
COVID-19 is currently infecting about 65,000 people in Australia every day.
George Baker is based in New South Wales state, where tens of thousands are testing positive daily.
He told Stuff the symptoms they had surprised them.
"We didn't think either of us that we would get to that state."
Since the pandemic began, NSW has recorded 425,404 COVID-19 cases and 711 virus-related deaths.
Australia has been posting successive record numbers of new daily infections, with another surge on Saturday - reporting 116,025 new cases. The surge is being driven by the highly-transmissible Omicron variant.
