Police are investigating an incident that left a four-month-old baby critically injured and taken to Invercargill hospital.

Police said the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning and the baby has since been transferred to Starship Hospital.

"A scene examination is being carried out at a residential property in Elizabeth Street, with the assistance of ESR," a police spokesperson said.

Police said that the residents of that property are assisting police with their enquiries and at this stage, nobody else is being sought in relation to this matter.
