Police have seized around 1kg of methamphetamine and arrested two Mongrel Mob members in an operation targeting serious drug offending in the Wairoa area.

Last week Eastern District Police investigators executed a number of search warrants involving members of the Mongrel Mob Mongrelism chapter.

During the operation Police recovered meth with an estimated street value of about $1 million, and arrested two senior patched members on charges relating to supply.

Tairawhiti CIB Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Moorhouse says police believe the meth was going to the Wairoa community and are "very pleased" to prevent so much from hitting the street.

"Wairoa as a community has clearly suffered from the impact of gang violence and the distribution of this highly addictive drug," he says.

"Police remain committed to preventing any violence and closing down the distribution of any illegal drug that causes harm to the community."

These arrests come after recent gang violence in Wairoa.

Last month a Mongrel Mob Aotearoa patched member was arrested over the stabbing of a rival gang member at the Z Energy forecourt on December 23.

Police were also involved in investigating another two shootings at gang addresses on December 23 and 24.
