Auckland's Eagle police helicopter has rescued a man after he fell off his bike and became surrounded by bulls in Maraetai on Monday afternoon.

The man, who didn't want to be named, told Newshub once he came off his bike on the Whitford bike track, he realised he was lost and he called emergency services for help.

It was then that he noticed he had company. At least 20 bulls had surrounded the man.

He held his bike above him as protection as the curious bulls moved closer towards him.

"I had no idea what they were going to do," he said.

The cyclist's exact location was not known, so Eagle carried out a search of the area.

The man remained still until help arrived.

"Eagle attended to do a flyover and located the male, who was extracted by Eagle and dropped off on the main road," a police spokesperson said.

The man said he was extremely grateful for the help of police and the Eagle helicopter before continuing on his journey - this time, sticking to the road.
