There was an unusual visitor at Auckland's Westfield train depot on Tuesday when staff spotted a seal pup hiding underneath a parked train.

According to a Facebook post by KiwiRail, the seal pup had likely worked its way up from the nearby Māngere inlet that backs onto the depot and was trying to escape from the heat.

Photos posted to the KiwiRail Facebook page show the seal lying on the tracks under a train.

Newshub understands these tracks are not actively being used by shunts within the depot but for storage of older passenger units.

Fire and Emergency staff cooled the seal with water and managed to persuade the seal out from under the train. It was then herded into a holding area until the Department of Conservation (DoC) arrived.
