A woman and a baby have died after being struck by a train at a railway station in Hamilton.

Emergency services were called to Frankton Train Station at around 8:10am on Tuesday. A person was found dead at the scene, police said.

In a later statement, police confirmed an infant was also found dead alongside the adult woman.

Police are now conducting a routine scene examination and offering support to those at the station at the time of the incident.

The death is expected to be referred to the Coroner.

KiwiRail acting group chief executive David Gordon told the New Zealand Herald that a member of the public was struck by a freight train shortly after 8am.

"These types of events are deeply traumatic for those involved, and our thoughts are with all those affected," Gordon told the Herald.

"In line with our standard practice, our locomotive engineer has been put on leave and will be offered counselling and any other support needed from KiwiRail."

It's understood the line remains closed and there will be disruptions to freight services between Hamilton and Tauranga.
