Emergency siren interrupts Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's press conference

The Prime Minister stays calm as her press conference Wednesday afternoon was interrupted by emergency sirens.

Jacinda Ardern was answering a question about the capital gains tax when sirens started blaring, causing her to pause.

"I'm going to assume that you are not going to want an answer through that," she told the reporter.

Ardern joked with reporters as the sirens rung, saying "you know you're with townies when they don't know what it is".

"It's also a sign of whether or not you've got good um signal… The fact that we still tend to use these [sirens] rather than using text systems," Ardern laughed.

Ardern says she was just about to go off-topic when a reporter asked her if they could re-ask their question.

It is unknown what the sirens were for.
