Next week is orientation week, the busiest week of the year for both students - and burglars, insurance data shows.

State Insurance data from 2019-2021 reveals most student-related insurance claims happen during O-week, as claims spike 26.9 percent.

State claims executive general manager Wayne Tippet says it's important for people to be aware of their personal possessions during the buzz and excitement of O-week.

"O-week is one of the best weeks of the year for university students, but unfortunately, there is a clear spike in theft-related claims during those two weeks."

While many O-week events have been cancelled due to the Omicron outbreak, students are still urged to be vigilant.

The top target for burglars scouring the universities are bikes at 22.7 percent of claims, followed by phones at 16 percent and laptops at 10.7 percent, the data shows.

Auckland students will need to be extra careful this O-week. The data shows the University of Auckland and the Auckland University of Technology top the list for the highest number of theft claims in O-week, followed by the University of Canterbury and Victoria University of Wellington.

So students should remember next week to lock their doors, windows and bikes before the orientation week's festivities commences.
